He sleeps, breathing rhythmically.
I snuggle on his tummy, then on his chest.
Listening to his heart beat away
to the rhythm of life.
He stirs and opens an eye;
I smile.
He rubs his nose on my forehead.
Our embrace loosens.
Many say I have beautiful eyes,
but one look at his –
the depth, the soul, the shine –
and I am sold.
They carry the wildness of an ocean
and the calmness of the sky.
They are a window
to everything pure man has lost.
His eyes speak
and coax mine.
And before we know it, we have a conversation.
